A spinal cord injury is an injury that is caused by trauma to the spine and the symptoms of this trauma can vary from pain to paralysis. Usually these injuries begin with an unexpected distressing blow to the spine that dislocated or fractures vertebrae. Spinal cord injuries are described at various levels of "incomplete" which can vary from having no effect on the patient to a "complete" injury which means a complete loss of motor function.
Spinal cord injuries have many causes, but are typically associated with major injuries from motor vehicle accidents, falls and sports injuries. It can also be involved in minor injuries, such as whiplash.
